Art Walk Night Parking Guide: Auburn to Grass Valley in Your Impreza
September 07 2026

The foothill art walk circuit between Old Town Auburn and Grass Valley's Mill Street ranks among the better evenings this region offers. On a First Saturday night, when everyone has the same idea, it also turns into one of the more reliably stressful parking situations in Placer and Nevada County. So here's the play, straight from our team on Grass Valley Hwy. Get the 2026 Subaru Impreza into the right spot before the crowds close in, walk both districts, and you'll spend your mental energy on the art instead of circling the block.

Up front, there's one tradeoff worth naming. You can't hit both Auburn and Grass Valley at peak timing unless you sequence the stops deliberately. Try to do both at once and you'll spend 25 minutes hunting parking in Old Town, miss the early gallery hours, and reach Mill Street right when everyone else does. Plan the sequence. It works.

Where Do You Park and When?

Plan to arrive earlier than you'd expect, since both Old Town Auburn and Grass Valley's Mill Street sit on compact historic footprints where the parking supply drops fast once foot traffic builds.

Subaru lists the 2026 Impreza at 176.2 inches long and 70.1 inches wide. On narrow Gold Country streets built for horses and foot traffic, that gap between a compact hatchback and a full-size SUV is real, and you'll feel it at 6 PM on a busy art walk night.

The Maneuvering Play on Historic Streets

Old Town Auburn runs tight by design, and on art walk nights you'll find the mix of pedestrians, cars parked half in the bike lane, and the occasional food truck turns simple maneuvering into a genuine skill check. The streets around Sacramento Street were laid out before cars existed.

The Impreza hatchback handles this well, and its compact size is the reason. Its wheelbase of 105.1 inches (per Subaru's official specs) keeps the turning radius manageable in spaces where a larger crossover needs a three-point correction. We've watched it play out on Lincoln Way. Where a longer Outback or Forester needs a correction, the Impreza tucks in on the first try.

The downtown streets are paved. The Impreza's 5.1 inches of ground clearance won't hold you back here.

Where the spec earns its keep is the climb up. Coming from Auburn via Highway 49 through some of the steeper foothill grades, the Symmetrical AWD system means you're not thinking about the road at all by late September, when evening rain starts to show up in the foothills.

For a post-walk trail detour, the Crosstrek is another solid option if you'd like a bit more ground clearance, but for the pure evening-in-town circuit, the Impreza's smaller footprint earns its place.

Parking tip for Old Town Auburn: The Courthouse lot off Maple Street is your anchor, with free parking and a 3-hour limit. If your evening runs longer than three hours across both districts (and it will), you'll want to use the lot for the first stop, then head to street parking on the way back or park uphill from the action. The lot sits right there at 101 Maple Street.
Etiquette on Mill Street: Grass Valley's historic downtown has a no-smoking rule throughout the district. Downtown Grass Valley also welcomes leashed pets, so if the dog's coming along, that's the more pet-forward stop of the two. Save it for the second half of the night, when paws are fresh.

Run through this list before you leave the house, because the circuit is easy when you're organized and a grind when you're not.

  • [ ] Check whether Auburn's Art Walk is the First Saturday of the month (Old Town Auburn runs the Art Walk monthly, self-guided, June through September)
  • [ ] Confirm Grass Valley's Mill Street gallery hours for the evening you're going (The Center for the Arts and the Chambers Project keep their own schedules)
  • [ ] Plan your Auburn stop first, targeting arrival by 5:30 PM to catch the Courthouse lot open
  • [ ] Set a phone timer for 2 hours 45 minutes when you park in the Courthouse lot; beat the 3-hour limit
  • [ ] Park once in Auburn and walk. The entire Old Town core is reachable on foot in a single loop; moving the car between galleries costs you 20 minutes
  • [ ] Note the South Church Street lot in Grass Valley before you leave Auburn; it's where the public restrooms are and it's a practical anchor for the second stop
  • [ ] If you're planning a late dinner on Mill Street, the lot off East Main near The Center for the Arts puts you close to the restaurant strip without competing for the core street spots
  • [ ] Check tire pressure and top off the tank before the run. The Hwy 49 grade between Auburn and Grass Valley is easy driving but you want the car sorted before an evening trip, not after

The plan comes down to two stops, one sequence, and one parking anchor per district. Go enjoy the art.
